Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently joined with local veterans in remembering the 68th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during the Long Island Air Force Association’s “Dropping of the Roses” ceremony.

During the program, Senator Fuschillo joined with the audience in honoring several local Pearl Harbor survivors, including Merrick resident William Halleran, Farmingdale resident Michael Montelione, and East Meadow resident Gerard Barbosa. Other local officials, including Senator Kemp Hannon, Senator Carl Marcellino, Assemblyman Dave McDonough, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt, Assemblyman Joe Saladino, and Oyster Bay Town Clerk Steve Labriola, also participated in the event.

As part of the annual ceremony, which was held at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale, veterans, local officials, and residents gathered together as roses were blessed with water from Pearl Harbor. An aircraft then took off from Republic Airport and dropped the roses over the Statue of Liberty in honor of those who died in the attack. The roses were dropped at approximately 12:55 pm New York time, which was the same time the attack on Pearl Harbor began.

“Those who served at Pearl Harbor fought bravely to defend our country and the freedoms and liberties we cherish. Like all veterans, they deserve our respect and gratitude. It was a privilege to join with the Pearl Harbor survivors, remember their actions on that fateful day, and thank them for their service to our country,” said Senator Fuschillo.
