Senator Onorato Recently Sent The Following Letter To The New York State Public Service Commission Regarding Consolidated Edison's Most Recent Rate Increase Request:
January 16, 2009
Garry A. Brown
Chairman
New York State Public
Service Commission
Agency Building #3
Empire State Plaza
Albany, NY 12223
Dear Chairman Brown:
I am writing to register my strong opposition to the most recent proposed rate increase sought by Consolidated Edison. My understanding is that two Public Service Commission administrative law judges have recommended that this company receive a $632 million one-year rate increase, which would be coming hot on the heels of an additional $425 million rate hike granted in 2008.
While the proposed $632 million increase is somewhat less than the $819 million hike initially sought by Consolidated Edison, I find it incredible that this company is seeking to place even greater financial burdens on its already strapped customers. In this very difficult economy, New York’s ratepayers are already having enough trouble paying for basic life necessities, and this proposed hike would be adding insult to injury – particularly for the people and businesses of Western Queens who have already suffered enormously at the hands of Consolidated Edison. I would be curious to know what corporate efficiencies Consolidated Edison has put into place, if any, to mitigate the need for rate increases. Families and individuals across our state and nation are tightening their belts during this time of economic challenge, and I would hope that Consolidated Edison is attempting to follow suit.
I thank you for your consideration, and hope that the Public Service Commission will deny this latest rate increase request by Consolidated Edison.
Sincerely,
George Onorato
State Senator, 12th District
