ALBANY - Bronx state Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. has jumped into the Daily News' campaign for tougher drunken driving laws.

Diaz on Monday called for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to "stop stalling" and pass a Senate-approved bill mandating ignition interlocks for anyone convicted of drunken driving.

The measure has at least 70 co-sponsors in the Assembly.

"Leandra Rosado's father's grief has touched all of our lives," Diaz said, referring to the 11-year-old Manhattan girl who was thrown from a car driven by drunken Carmen Huertas, 31, of the Bronx.

"This bill should wait no longer to become law," said Diaz, who co-sponsored the Senate bill.

Leandra's father, Lenny, 45, wants tougher drunken driving laws so his daughter's death will not be in vain. He supports legislation that calls for tougher penalties against drunken drivers with kids in the car.
