Staten Island school supply giveaway gets an A+
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The first day of school is still a few weeks off, but Desilva Christopher will be ready.
“This is pretty cool,” said Desilva, 11, a student at Prall Intermediate School, West Brighton, as he clutched a bag of free school supplies yesterday. “I have notebooks now. I have pencils.”
Desilva and his sister, Rogerline, 10, who goes to PS 25, Pleasant Plains, were among the nearly 1,000 people who lined up on Wright Street outside the Central Family Life Center, Stapleton, to participate in state Sen. Diane Savino’s second annual “Back to School Blast.”
“Times are hard for everyone,” said Ms. Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn). “Even if supplies cost $10 or $12 a kid, some parents are laying out more than they have. It’s important to get them what they need.”
