Sandy was a nonpartisan disaster and here's a bipartisan letter to Gov. Cuomo -- who's in DC lobbying for federal aid to rebuild -- from GOP Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, Republican state Sen. Andrew Lanza and Democratic state Sen. Diane Savino, all of whom represent hard-hit Staten Island on another way the state might help.

"With home repairs and other expenses cutting so deeply into New Yorkers’ budgets, we are proposing that the state waive its portion of the sales tax on the purchase of new vehicles for those who lost their previous vehicle in the storm," they write. "The elimination of this fee is the least we can do to help New Yorkers afford this essential purchase when they are already facing so much financial and personal stress as a result of the storm."
