Staten Island Hurricane Sandy buyout meeting for Great Kills/Eltingville residents on Saturday, May 11

Andrew J Lanza

The Crescent Beach Buyout Committee is hosting a meeting on Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Oakwood Heights Community Church, specifically for Great Kills- and Eltingville-based homeowners who are unable to repair their Sandy-ravaged homes.

The emphasis will be on buyouts from the state. There will also be some mention of New York City redevelopment plans and upcoming FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) flood zone changes, which can result in people living in the current high risk zones reclassified into the less risky zones.

The community meeting on Saturday will feature a presentation by Michael Arvanites, state Sen. Diane Savino's deputy chief of staff. Representatives of state Sen. Andrew Lanza and Congressman Michael Grimm's offices have been invited to attend.

Topics to be covered, include:

  • New York State buyout program
  • New buyout qualification rules
  • New York City redevelopment program
  • Linkage between city and state plans
  • Upcoming FEMA flood zone changes
  • Appealing FEMA flood zones
  • Options for FEMA Zone A home owners
While the meeting is focused on accommodating Great Kills and Eltingville residents, Staten Islanders from other storm-ravaged areas are welcome to attend if space allows. Those outside the Great Kills and Eltingville areas interested in attending the meeting should call, 718-247-9392.
