The Recorder: Senator honors brothers in arms

ST. JOHNSVILLE -- During this month's St. Johnsville Springfest, Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk presented honorary proclamations to two brothers -- Armand and Leo Mancini -- who served with distinction in World War II.

Stated the proclamation, "It is the privilege of the New York State Senate to honor Armand Mancini for his exemplary citizenship on behalf of our community and state upon the recognition of his service to our country as a Veteran of the United States Air Force."

Armand was born on March 19, 1922, and raised in St. Johnsville. Armand and Leo's parents came from Italy to America to seek opportunity and a better life for their children.

Armand served bravely in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was shot down over New Guinea, receiving serious wounds, and was declared missing in action.

Armand was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and many other medals in recognition of his duty and sacrifice.

Of Leo, the proclamation stated, "It is the privilege of the New York State Senate to honor Leo Thomas Mancini for his exemplary citizenship on behalf of our community and state upon the recognition of his service to our country as a Veteran of the United States Air Force."

Leo was born on February 19, 1920, raised in St. Johnsville.

Leo served bravely in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, in both Europe and Morocco, and was awarded the Air Medal with Seven Clusters in recognition of flying 60 missions, as well as many other medals.

Following the War, Leo became senior vice-president of the Central National Bank in Canajoharie, and was active in both the Catholic Church and the American Legion.135.
