MARCELLINO DENOUNCES ED. SECRETARY KING’S PROPOSAL

Carl L. Marcellino

Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset) announced today that he opposes United States Education Secretary John B. King Jr.’s proposed new Federal regulations negatively designating public schools with high Common Core tests refusals as in need of improvement.

“It’s no secret that I have serious issues with Secretary King and his handling of the failed Common Core roll out when he was Education Commissioner here in New York.  His lack of vision and communication skills sent our state down a path that hurt students, teachers and schools.  Secretary King was out of touch then and is showing that his time in D.C. has changed nothing.  Punitive actions and negative labels are the cornerstone of King’s flawed education policies and have no place in any school in this State or this Country,” said Senator Carl L. Marcellino, Chairman of the New York State Senate Education Committee.

The proposed Federal regulations by the U.S. Department of Education address accountability, data reporting, and state plan provisions relating to the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act ( ESSA), which is scheduled to go into effect at the beginning of the 2017–18 school year.

“Since his departure from SED in 2014, we have taken numerous positive steps here in New York to undo the damage done by Secretary King.  We still have work to do, and obviously, flawed proposed Federal regulations such as those proposed by Dr. King need to be  pushed back.  It is deplorable that our US Education Department is more interested in threats and fear tactics than educating our children,” concluded Senator Marcellino
