BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Thursday night, three people, including a local sheriff's deputy, were honored for heroic actions.

Senator Rob Ortt, 62nd District, presented them with the New York State Liberty medal.

Their actions stemmed from a car accident in Pendleton last November.

Off-duty Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy Nicholas Walter and Niagara County residents Louie Martorana and Jeff Allen saved a man trapped in his car seconds before it was engulfed with flames. The car had crashed into a tree on Beach Ridge Road.

They worked to pull the driver, Anthony May, out of the vehicle, saving his life.

The senate liberty medal is the highest honor someone can receive by the state senate.
