The City of Port Jervis Police Department has begun to utilize the $100,000 in SNUG grant secured by Senator James Skoufis (D-Orange County).

The SNUG program is an evidence-based outreach initiative aimed at treating the root cause of community violence. This year marks the first time Port Jervis will implement the SNUG program thanks to the new funding.

“The City of Port Jervis Police Department is extremely grateful for Senator Skoufis’ assistance in securing funding to promote anti-violence programs and initiatives in partnership with ADACO of Orange County and the Port Jervis City School District,” Worden said. “This program is having a positive impact on the quality of life and safety in our community”.

In addition to an ongoing presence at school events, Police Chief William Worden and his department recently partnered with the Port Jervis Central School District to present a series of assemblies from speaker and award-winning singer Jared Campbell. His message focuses on overcoming obstacles, anti-bullying, respect, leadership, and having a positive outlook on life.

Earlier this week, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students heard a powerful message about empathy, compassion, and the importance of asking for and offering help to each other.

“It takes a village to prevent the threat of violence in our communities, and using credible and compelling messengers is a great way to impact these kids as they’re growing and developing their outlook on life,” Senator Skoufis said. “I was proud to fight for this funding in the state budget this year, and I’m grateful for Chief Worden and our partners in Port Jervis.”
