Senator James Skoufis (D-Orange County) has announced that his bill to expand veterans benefits was signed into law. Governor Kathy Hochul signed it as part of a legislative package in honor of New York’s veterans.

As the law previously stood, only veterans who had served during wartime were eligible to receive certain New York benefits. Skoufis’ bill expands those eligible, so all veterans will have access to their entitled benefits, regardless of wartime status during service. This law will take immediate effect.

“It is incumbent upon all of us to do all we can to improve the lives of the brave men and women who have served our country, and ensuring entitled benefits is the least we can do,” said Senator Skoufis. “While we should commemorate and recognize our veterans year-round, Veterans Day feels like an appropriate day to see an expansion of benefits for veterans enshrined into law. I am proud to honor all members of service, whose sacrifices make possible our freedom and safety.”
