N.Y. again fails to pass Medical Aid in Dying Act

Terminally ill New Yorkers hoping to relieve their suffering through legal medical means encountered yet another devastating setback on Friday, as the Medical Aid in Dying Act failed to advance through the state legislature for the fifth-straight time.

“As the prime co-sponsor of the Medical Aid in Dying Act, I am disheartened that we did not pass it this session,” said Staten Island state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton. “This legislation is set to help give a compassionate option for people grappling with terminal illness. It enables them to retain control over their end-of-life journey, offering peace and autonomy during life’s most challenging moments.

“Passing this would have positioned New York among a growing number states recognizing the importance of providing dignified end-of-life options to its residents.”
