Threats in ‘our own backyard’; LGBTQ+ Staten Islanders fearful after worldwide travel alert

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- St. George resident KC Hankins said while it has always been “a scary world” for LGBTQ+ people, recent threats of worldwide violence against the queer community is also right here in the United States, New York and on Staten Island.

“It is devastating that in 2024 people from the LGBTQ+ community are targets of hateful bigotry. This advisory should not be necessary, but the sad reality is that it is. I urge my friends to take caution while traveling and stay alert,” said State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn). “My heart is with you if you are feeling singled out and please stay safe.”
