Larkin Announces 2005 Correction Officer Exam

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced a new examination for the position of Correction Officer with the New York State Department of Correctional Services will be held on March 19, 2005.

Applications must be sent no later than January 31, 2005.

Once accepted, candidates would be required to complete a 12-month training program through the Correctional Services Training Academy.

A trainee’s starting salary is currently $28,444 per year, which increases after six months to $30,043. Upon completion of the one-year traineeship, which ends one year after the employee’s date of initial appointment into the Academy, the salary increases to $34,742 per year.

In addition, candidates who successfully complete the Academy training and a subsequent probation period would be eligible for tuition reimbursement for up to sixteen college credits toward a post-secondary degree. Officers also receive a comprehensive health insurance program, benefits package and retirement program.

Candidates must be 21 years of age on or before the date of their appointment, and in good physical and mental health. The application fee is $30.00.
