Senator Klein Reacts To Independent Audit Of Yonkers Public Schools

Jeffrey D. Klein

April 6, 2006

“This audit makes clear what many of us have known for some time – Sweeping reform is needed to build success in Yonkers. The State Legislature has delivered record amounts of funding to Yonkers and it is incumbent upon us to ensure that these funds make their way to classrooms to help students achieve academic excellence. The people of Yonkers expect and deserve a public school system that works for every child and that means truly reforming our schools to bring meaningful oversight responsibility and accountability.”

Senator Klein also announced that he will be joining with Yonkers City Councilwoman Sandy Annabi, Chair of the Council's Education Committee, to host two public forums on possibilities for reforming Yonkers School governance, including a proposal for complete Mayoral control, modeled after the plan recently implemented in New York City or a shift to a directly-elected Board of Education, as is the case in Westchester's other municipalities. The forums will be held as follows:

7:00pm

160 Woodlawn Avenue, Yonkers

7:00pm

1 Larkin Plaza, Yonkers
