Babylon’s Corinne Disomma Named 2007 Woman Of Distinction

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Finance Committee, presented Corinne DiSomma of Babylon --Town of Babylon receiver of Taxes -- with the 2007 New York State Woman of Distinction award at a special ceremony held at the State Legislative Office Building this week. Corinne, a lifelong resident of Babylon, was one of more than 40 women from all across the state who were honored with the prestigious award that recognizes women whose work has enriched the quality of life in their communities.
"Corinne has spent her entire life contributing to and working in the Town of Babylon and her genuine concern for the people she represents has won her their support. It’s also won her the respect and admiration fellow public servants regardless of party affiliation," said Senator Owen H. Johnson. "Corinne has endeavored to make government convenient and accessible for the people she serves and she’s done that very successfully."
After graduating from high school, Corinne worked at a company in Lindenhurst where she earned enough money to put herself through college. She earned a degree in Business Administration from Suffolk Community College. The second of four children of a state trooper and stay-at-home mom, Corinne was always active in local politics. She was interviewed for the Deputy Tax Receivers position in 1978 and, in 1999, ran for Receiver of Taxes. She’s run unopposed ever since. As receiver of Taxes, she’s instituted many programs to increase inefficiency and streamline services including a method by which taxpayers can use their credit cards to pay their taxes.
During Corinne’s 30 years of public service she’s been involved in many volunteer organizations and has received numerous awards including the West Babylon Athletic Club Woman of the Year and the Gertrude VanKirk Women in Government Award. awards.
An active volunteer, Corinne was a financial secretary for Fredshore Beach Club, participated in the Great New York Read Aloud program, served as a member of the West Babylon PTA, participated in the Babylon Breast Cancer Walk-A-Thon, the Suffolk County Boy Scout Council Phone-A-Thon, Boy Scouts of America Fundraiser, WBPTA Fundraisers, Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shining Star and Cub Scout Pack 104.
Corinne is married with two children.
