NYS SENATOR ERIC ADAMS JOINS OTHER ELECTED OFFICIALS AT THE CO-NAMING CEREMONY OF LINCOLN PLACE IN HONOR OF BENNY A. LYDE
NYS Senator Eric Adams joins many other elected officials to celebrate the life of Benny A. Lyde at a street co-naming ceremony on Lincoln Place. The installation of new Crown Heights street signs was unveiled on Lincoln Place between New York Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue. Lincoln Place will henceforth be co-named Benny A. Lyde Place.
Senator Adams’ statement: “Benny A. Lyde was a promising student, a college senior studying business management and computer science at Long Island University, when his life was tragically cut short by gun violence. He was a model young citizen: he was gainfully employed, assisted his parents with their bills, and mentored his younger siblings. He gave back to the community, helping run a literacy program for young people in East New York.
“The premature termination of any innocent life is a misfortune. But the loss of an individual of Benny’s quality, someone who had successfully met the challenges faced ineffectively by so many others, is a true calamity. I am proud to be part of the initiative to commemorate his life by co-naming Lincoln Place in his honor.”
The street co-naming ceremony took place on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at 1 PM, on Lincoln Place between New York and Brooklyn Avenues. NYS Senator Eric Adams, Assemblyman Karim Camara, Borough President Marty Markowitz, Council Member Letitia James, Council Member Al Vann, Council Member David Yassky, District Attorney Charles Hynes, 43rd District Leader Jesse Hamilton, 77th Precinct Community Council member James Caldwell, CB 8 member Fred Monderson, and Shalawn Langhorne, Community Counseling and Mediation (CCM) were scheduled to be in attendance. Lyde family members, including mother Robin Lyde, also were present.
