Elmira, N.Y., September 2–State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) said today that several area municipalities, including the cities of Corning, Hornell, Elmira and Ithaca, have been awarded state grant funding through the Restore-NY Communities Initiatives (Restore-NY) program.
Restore-NY, created by the state Legislature as part of the 2006-07 state budget, is designed to aid municipalities in rehabilitating or removing obsolete or rundown commercial and residential properties in order to make the sites attractive to residents and businesses searching for new investment opportunities.
“We envisioned Restore-NY as yet another building block in the restoration and revitalization of quality communities throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions and statewide,” said Winner. “It’s proven a useful tool in sparking local economic development, creating local jobs and energizing community pride.”
Winner was informed earlier today that the following local projects have been awarded Restore-NY grants:
> City of Corning, $1.47 million for the East End Redevelopment Project;
> City of Elmira, $1.25 million for the redevelopment of the Federal Building;
> City of Hornell, $1.5 million for the Federation Building Redevelopment Project;
> City of Ithaca, $1.15 million for the Downtown Commons Upper Story Housing project;
> Village of Bath, $1.18 million for the restoration of the Masonic Temple;
> Village of Horseheads, $380,576 for the South Avenue Redevelopment Project;
> Village of Montour Falls, $766,500 for the rehabilitation of the former Rural Urban Center;
> Village of Penn Yan, $2.5 million for downtown revitalization; and
> Village of Watkins Glen, $1.19 million for Magee Point Landing.
