Serrano Sends Message to Community in Support of Marriage Equality

José M. Serrano

May 28, 2009

Throughout my career as a public official, I have strongly supported Marriage Equality. Moreover, I am a co-sponsor of the Senate bill (S.4401) that will provide same-sex couples the same opportunity to enter into civil marriages as opposite-sex couples.

I consider Marriage Equality a part of the ongoing struggle for civil rights in this country. State government must take comprehensive action, both on the legislative and budgetary fronts, and I applaud Governor Paterson for his leadership.

As part of this year’s budget, I have awarded grants to organizations including the Bronx Community Pride Center and Gay Men’s Health Crisis.

The communities I represent in the 28th Senate District – from East Harlem and the South Bronx to Yorkville and Roosevelt Island – have long distinguished themselves as bastions of social progress. Though diverse in their make-up, these communities share a commitment to equal rights, and the eagerness to fight discrimination.

Today we continue that fight. I appreciate all the correspondence from residents both in my district and across the State, and I promise to work tirelessly in the Capitol to make Marriage Equality a reality for all New Yorkers.

Sincerely,

José M. Serrano
