State Weatherization Assistance Program Helps Low Income Residents Save on Energy Costs

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle would like to make people aware of the New York State Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), which offers income-eligible households free help with reducing energy consumption and improving home safety. “As the record-breaking temperatures make for the coldest days of winter, many homeowners realize the need for energy saving measures,” said Senator LaValle. “However, many people cannot afford the costly repairs that would be required to make their home more energy efficient.”
Senator LaValle noted that WAP recently received an additional $48 million in federal funding to help homeowners with home energy conservation measures. The program offers free services to both homeowners and renters, with priority given to senior citizens, families with children, and persons with disabilities. Services may include installing insulation, repairing or replacing doors and windows, caulking, weather-stripping, interior air sealing, repairing or replacing heating systems, and installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
In Suffolk County, WAP has been managed by the Community Development Corporation (CDC) since the early 1980s. After performing an energy inspection, CDC determines the most cost-effective means of reducing energy consumption.
