Senator Oppenheimer Urges All Women to Get a Mamogram This Mother's Day

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today urged all women to give themselves a precious gift this Mother’s Day – the gift of peace of mind. Stressing the importance of mammography and early detection in the fight against breast cancer, Senator Oppenheimer made her remarks in connection with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program’s annual Mother’s Day Mammography Campaign.

Any individual in New York State can call the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline’s toll-free number (800-877-8077), or visit its website, www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer, to receive emotional support, information and referrals from highly trained volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors. The Program’s social work staff also provides professional services, all of which are free to the public.

"Many women avoid getting mammograms," noted Senator Oppenheimer, "fearing a possible cancer diagnosis. But the truth is that the vast majority of women do not have breast cancer and have nothing to fear." Even when a malignancy is found, early detection offers the most complete range of treatment options and the best prospect of a full recovery.
