September 29, 2010

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is inviting local senior citizens to attend his annual Golden Gathering on Thursday, October 21st. The Golden Gathering will take place from 9 am to 1 pm at the Freeport Recreation Center, which is located at 130 East Merrick Road in Freeport.

The 2010 Golden Gathering will have over 100 exhibitors on hand to answer any questions that senior citizens may have on a variety of issues such as health and nutrition, consumer protection, public safety, and insurance. As in previous years, visitors will also be able to access health services such as no-out-of-pocket-cost flu vaccinations provided by the Nassau Health Care Corporation (subject to availability), free blood pressure screenings, free chiropractic screenings, and free hearing screenings.

In addition, seniors will also be able to take advantage of new programs this year, such as “Shed the Meds,” where seniors can safely dispose of their expired or unneeded medications, and “Shred the Word,” where seniors can bring old documents to be shredded.

The Town of Hempstead Town Clerk’s office will also be offering on site passport services to all in attendance. Seniors who want to obtain or renew a passport should call Senator Fuschillo’s office for more information about requirements.

The event also includes musical entertainment by the Freeport Community Chorale, students from the Seaford School District, and Ms. New York Senior America Elisabeth Zamarelli. Refreshments will be served.

In cooperation with the Towns of Hempstead, Oyster Bay and Babylon, as well as the Village of Massapequa Park, free transportation will be available from ten locations for seniors.

"The Golden Gathering allows senior citizens to access a wide variety of information and get several different types of free health care screenings all under one roof," Senator Fuschillo said. "I hope that all seniors will take advantage of this special event by visiting the Freeport Recreation Center on October 21st."

Residents who need directions to the Freeport Recreation Center, information regarding transportation or have any other questions should call Senator Fuschillo’s office at 516-882-0630 or visit his website at fuschillo.nysenate.gov.
