Last weekend Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) was presented with the Legislative Champion Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  This award was bestowed in recognition of “significant leadership in advancing the care, treatment, and quality of life for people living with cystic fibrosis in New York.”

“I’m honored by this designation, and I will continue my efforts to fight for persons and families dealing with cystic fibrosis in Albany,” Senator Maziarz said.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the nation’s leading non-profit organization devoted to cystic fibrosis.  It funds and accredits hundreds of care centers, adult care programs, and affiliate programs, and has 80 chapter and branch offices nationwide.

Last year, Senator Maziarz sponsored legislation excluding Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-run pharmacies, which provide drugs exclusively for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, from the provisions of the Specialty Pharmacy Program.  This program threatened the continuity and coordination of care for cystic fibrosis patients.  The legislation was passed unanimously by the State Legislature in the summer of 2009 and it was signed into law by Governor Paterson on September 11, 2009.

The Legislative Champion Award was presented on May 15, 2010 at the annual Great Strides Walk in Lockport sponsored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—Western New York Chapter.
