Sweeney Street reopens, Remington Rand redevelopment project advances

Senator George Maziarz today joined North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt and developer Anthony Kissling in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official re-opening of a key section of Sweeney Street.

“This is a great day for North Tonawanda,” Senator Maziarz said.  “Not just because Sweeney Street has reopened to traffic, but because this reopening means a significant amount of work has been done in the redevelopment of the old Remington Rand site.  This project is important to the city’s future, and it’s moving forward.”

Sweeney Street, in the vicinity of the former Remington Rand complex, was closed to motor vehicle traffic early in the summer.  Closing one block of Sweeney Street, between Oliver and Marion Streets, facilitated intensive road reconstruction work taking place at the site.  New utility pipes were installed underground, and the road was rebuilt to feature a new driving surface, diagonal parking, and sidewalks.

Mayor Ortt said, “Opening this road signifies a very important and big step toward the completion of this landmark project.  We appreciate the patience of our residents while the road was closed.  This project is symbolic of the renewal and redevelopment of our downtown and waterfront areas, and will be something that all taxpayers of North Tonawanda will be proud of.”

In 2006, the Kissling Interests purchased the Remington property with a vision of creating a mixture of unique commercial and residential uses, including scores of live-work loft apartments.  The contractor on the project is R&P Oak Hill Development from Buffalo.
