Addabbo: Governor Signs Bill That Polling Places Be Situated Directly on a Public Transportation Route

Legislation Amends Election Law

Queens, NY, September 3, 2010 – NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., Chair of the Senate’s Elections Committee, reports that the Governor David Paterson has signed a bill, that was prime sponsored by Addabbo, which provides that “polling places, whenever practicable, shall be designated directly on a public transportation route”.  The new law was signed August 30 and is effective immediately.  
 

The legislation is designed to ensure that when feasible, polling sites are to be located on
public transit routes, so the elderly, those with physical disabilities and others without
their own transportation, can more easily get to and from their polling places.
 
Addabbo explained, “Seniors, the disabled and others who don’t have their own transportation, as well as those who need parking where it is unavailable, may have difficulty getting to the polls and voting. This new law is intended to make it easier for just those citizens who desire to vote, to more conveniently be able to do so—right on time for the September 14 Primary Day and the November 2 Election Day."
