Senator Announces Highway Safety Grants Awarded to Local Governments and Law Enforcement Groups

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle is pleased to announce that several towns, villages, police departments, and agencies within the First Senate District have been awarded grants in support of their highway safety programs. The federal grant dollars will be administered through the New York State Governor’s Traffic and Safety Committee and will address occupant restraint and traffic enforcement issues.
Senator LaValle noted that the Town of Brookhaven, East Hampton Town and Village Police Departments, Quogue Village Police Department, Riverhead Town Police Department, Sag Harbor Village Police Department, Shelter Island Town Police Department, Southampton Town and Village Police Departments, Southold Police Department, and Westhampton Beach Village Police Department, as well as the South Fork Community Health Initiative, have been awarded funding under this initiative.
The grant programs being funded include:
Buckle Up New York (BUNY) – a seat belt enforcement and education program
Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) – supports targeting problem areas and the development of enforcement measures to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities
Child Passenger Safety (CHP) – supports child passenger fitting stations, child safety check events, and car seat distribution for low income families
Highway Safety Programs for Local, State, and Non-Profit Agencies – provides funds for other highway issues that need to be addressed through education, enforcement, engineering, training or technology
“I am pleased that local governments and agencies within the First Senate District have been awarded funds to improve driver and passenger safety and make our roadways safe for travel,” concluded Senator LaValle.
