Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that he will be joined by Assemblyman Marc Alessi, Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty, and the Theinert family for the unveiling of the “Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way” road sign on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. on Shelter Island. The sign that will be displayed was created by the NYS Department of Transportation and is an actual size mock up of what the road sign will look like when it is installed.
Senator LaValle and Assemblyman Alessi passed legislation to create the “Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way” in the Town of Shelter Island. The stretch of NYS Route 114 that runs approximately 1.4 miles in length from the South Ferry Terminal to the Cartwright Road Circle will be named in honor of Lt. Theinert, a native Shelter Island resident who lost his life while serving with the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan.
“I feel so honored to be able to pay tribute to this local hero,” Alessi said. “Designating part of the highway in honor of Joseph will not only acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice he made, it will also honor all Shelter Island veterans who have given up so much for our country.”
“This is a fitting tribute to a young man whose appreciation for Shelter Island and commitment to protecting the freedoms we cherish have touched an entire community,” said Senator LaValle. “The ‘Lt. Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Way’ will honor the memory and courageous deeds of Lt. Theinert who made the ultimate sacrifice in his service to our country.”
"Ken and Marc have been so sensitive and responsive to Shelter Island in our time of sorrow," Supervisor Jim Dougherty commented, "the Joey Theinert family and all Shelter Islanders are very grateful to them."
