Senator Fuschillo Invites Residents to Sign “Pass the Tax Cap” Online Petition

          Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is inviting residents to voice their support for a property tax cap by signing his “pass the tax cap” online petition. Residents can sign the online petition by visiting Senator Fuschillo’s website, Fuschillo.nysenate.gov.

          “Tax relief is the number one priority for Long Islanders, who pay some of the highest property taxes in the entire country. High taxes are driving families and businesses off of Long Island. It has to stop,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Controlling spending is the only way to control taxes. That’s exactly what a property tax cap would do. I invite everyone to sign the online petition and tell New York State that you want a property tax cap, and you want it now!”  

           The property tax cap would cap local tax levy growth at either two percent or the annual increase in the consumer price index, whichever is less. The tax cap would apply to both school districts and municipal governments.

           The New York State Senate has already passed the property tax cap legislation, which is supported by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Assembly needs to approve the measure before it can become law. 

New York’s state and local tax burden is the second highest in the country, according to The Tax Foundation, a nonprofit research organization. 12.1 percent of New Yorkers’ income goes towards paying state and local taxes, far above the national average of 9.8 percent. New York missed having the highest state and local tax burden by just .1 percent. 

            Nearly 80 percent of New Yorkers support the property tax cap, according to a recent Quinnipiac University survey.
