On Friday evening, May 6, Senator Jack M. Martins attended an Eagle Court of Honor for the newest Eagle Scouts from Mineola Boy Scout Troop 45.
In its 90-year history, Troop 45 has a rich tradition of producing Eagle Scouts, which is the highest honor a scout can achieve. It takes years of dedication and commitment to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Vincent Buonincontro, Nicholas Fiori, Glenn Peters, Nickolas D’Annunzio, Perry Llanes and Zachary Rachell joined the apex of scouting, making 122 Eagle Scout for Troop 45 including Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss, who earned the rank in 1981.
For his Eagle Scout project, Buonincontro worked to beautify the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter, providing a safer and cleaner environment for training the animals at the shelter.
D’Annunzio led a team that constructed a 125-foot pathway at The Saint Brigid’s Church in Westbury, enabling many of the members of the church to access newly acquired facilities.
Fiori designed and installed a prayer garden for the Church of Saint Aidan’s in Williston Park, which can be found on the corner of Pembrook and Astor.
Llanes held an intergenerational day of physical activities between the scouts and the residents of the Oyster Bay Manor nursing home. The day benefited the physical needs of the residents for exercise and physical therapy.
Rachell designed and planned the restoration of an under-utilized meeting room in the youth center of St. Aidan’s Church. The project allowed the room to once again be used.
Peters designed, constructed and installed four picnic tables with seats and six garden benches at the Hampton Street School in Mineola, helping to beautify the school grounds for the students.
“I commend these fine young men on their enormous achievement. The lessons they learned in Troop 45 will serve them well in all areas of their lives. I also want to thank them for the projects they have chosen, which will benefit the community. They have bright futures ahead of them,” said Senator Martins. “I also want to congratulate Scoutmaster Steve Grosskopf, Frank D’Elia and all the dedicated volunteers that have made Troop 45 one of Mineola’s treasures.”
