State Senator Jack Martins dropped by Dutch Broadway School in Elmont to swear-in the new Student President Nolan Alexandre-Baker. Nolan won the student election held at the school the previous week during a special Assembly where candidates gave speeches and students voted. Senator Martins congratulated the candidates and took the opportunity to swear-in Nolan for his term in front of sixth graders in Mr. Verde's class.
During the visit, Senator Martins and Dutch Broadway School Principal Walter Aksionoff listened to Nolan's platform and ideas to make the school more responsive to students and the Elmont community. "One of the things I want to do is start a school newspaper so that we can all know what's going on in Dutch Broadway," said Alexandre-Baker to Senator Martins. "That's a great idea and shows that you want all of your classmates informed and involved," replied Martins.
Principal Walter Aksionoff noted that he looks forward to working with Nolan and all the student officers as they begin their work in the school. "Nolan and all the candidates did a great job during the election and I couldn't have been more proud of them."
Senator Martins swore-in Nolan in front of sixth graders who cheered as Alexandre-Baker repeated the oath of office. As Martins administered the oath, Baker-Alexander replied and pledged to work hard for all the students at Dutch Broadway.
"Nolan is a very bright young man who is respected by his peers and is a rising star in the Elmont community," said Senator Martins adding, "it was a real honor to swear him in as President of the school."
