(New York, NY) – Today Senator Liz Krueger hosted her Fifth Annual Senior Resource Fair. At this free event seniors have the chance to talk to representatives from a variety of government and non-profit agencies that specialize in everything from healthcare to care-giver support to housing to healthy aging to volunteer opportunities to cultural affairs. Joining Senator Krueger and residents from the community were Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and Assembly Member Micah Kellner.
At the fair Senator Krueger also unveiled and distributed the Fourth Edition of her Senior Resource Guide, a 90 page comprehensive guide that provides information on everything from long term care to veterans’ benefits to healthcare to housing, and much more.
"Year after year, my Senior Resource Fair grows bigger. It never ceases to amaze me how strong of a demand there is for this type of event,” said Senator Krueger. “By bringing together government agencies, non profits and the communities they serve under one roof, we've been able to streamline the delivery of resources to hundreds of seniors and their caregivers who often have a hard time accessing relevant information. Too many seniors find themselves in real distress during these tough economic times, making it even more imperative that they are aware of every single service and opportunity that can be of assistance."
This year, over 60 exhibitors were on hand to provide information helpful to older adults, their friends and families. In years past the fair has been a draw for individuals from across the five boroughs, with over 600 people attending last year.
“For the past five years, Senator Krueger’s Senior Resource Fair has brought specialized housing, legal, medical and cultural service providers together under one roof,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. “I want to thank Senator Krueger for this incredible undertaking and for her continued efforts to connect the City’s senior population with these critical resources.”
“I commend Senator Krueger for her leadership in hosting New York City’s Fifth Annual Senior Resource Fair,” said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. “This event has become a bigger and bigger success each year, helping thousands of seniors learn more about resources available to them. I am proud to be a part of it, and I hope to continue working with Senator Krueger to ensure New York City’s seniors receive the care and services they deserve.”
“I am proud to join Senator Krueger at such a wonderful event,” said Assembly Member Micah Kellner. “Seniors have given so much to our community and today is an opportunity to give something back to them. This fair will help ensure that they have the resources and support they deserve.”
In addition to the exhibitors, the Congressional Glaucoma Foundation performed on-site Glaucoma testing; Lenox Hill Hospital, on-site blood pressure testing; and New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) offered assistance with filling out Health Care Proxies and Living Wills.
