Senator Gianaris and Assemblymember Simotas Work to Improve Traffic and Safety in Lic

Sent letter to NYC DOT requesting side-angle and alternate side parking.

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris and Assemblymember Aravella Simotas are working together to improve traffic and safety measures for local residents and workers in western Queens, specifically those located near 14th Street between 34th Avenue and 33rd Road in Long Island City. Senator Gianaris and Assemblymember Simotas sent a letter to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) requesting the establishment of angled parking at these streets due to an inadequate amount of available parking spaces in the area.

The limited spaces available are already in high demand from the thousands of residents who live nearby, especially in the highly populated developments of the Queensview Homes, Ravenswood Houses and the Estates of Hallet’s Cove. Long Island City High School and a Department of Sanitation facility are also in the vicinity, bringing additional traffic to the area.

“As Long Island City continues to develop, it is important that our infrastructure keeps pace,” Senator Gianaris said. “I am hopeful DOT will acknowledge the rapid growth in this area and meet the growing parking needs so that LIC can continue attracting more residents, workers and businesses.”

In addition, Senator Gianaris and Assemblymember Simotas are asking that alternate-side parking be implemented on 14th Street to combat the pollution and litter buildup caused by the high volume of drivers who frequent the area.

“As a government, we have a responsibility to adjust to the demands of growing neighborhoods like Long Island City,” Assemblymember Simotas said. “The actions we are requesting from the DOT would help ensure that our community’s residents and workers are provided with clean streets and adequate parking space as they go about their daily lives.”
