Dr. Evelyn Blose Holman Receives the 2011 Distinguished Bay Shore-Brightwaters Citizen Award

Dr. Evelyn Blose Holman, retiring Superintendent of the Bay Shore Union Free School District, was the recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Bay Shore-Brightwaters Citizen Award.  Senator Owen H. Johnson, together with Assemblyman Phil Boyle and Assemblyman Philip Ramos, presented Dr. Holman with a Legislative Resolution to honor the occasion.

The Eleventh Annual Bay Shore-Brightwaters Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Bay Shore and the Bay Shore Business Improvement District, took place at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore on April 29, 2011.

“Dr. Holman has been a visionary for positive change throughout her career in education,”  Senator Johnson said.  “The Bay Shore schools and community have truly benefited from her exemplary service and invaluable contributions to education.”  

Dr. Holman founded the Bay Shore Summit in 1994 on the premise of uniting a community for change and set in place a new direction toward excellence in Bay Shore’s schools.  She instituted new programs and initiatives for student development including the International Baccalaureate Program, full-day Kindergarten and pre-school programs, Naviance computer assistance for college preparation, and an individual tutoring program to help students prepare for writing their college entrance essays.

Other significant achievements for which Dr. Holman may be credited include SAT scores rising above the state and national averages, Bay Shore Senior High School’s recognition as a Suffolk County Human Rights High School, and the School District becoming a four-time winner of the National School Boards Association’s MAGNA Award for its Annual Community Summit, School-Community Collaboration, Wellness Alliance, and Bay Shore Senior High School’s Multimedia Program.

Dr. Holman has been named three times to the Top 100 Superintendents in North America list.  Her many awards and honors include the New York State Senate’s Woman of the Year Award, the New York State United Teachers’ Friend of Education Award, the Council of Administrators and Supervisors’ Service Award, the New York State Alliance for Arts Education’s Award, and the New York State Council of School Superintendents’ Leadership in Arts Education Award.  

Most recently Dr. Holman received the Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities Educator of Excellence Award, and the Maritime Museum’s Outstanding Educator Award.  Dr. Holman was named one of Long Island’s Top 50 Women, and also was honored at Hofstra University’s Celebration of Suburban Diversity.

Dr. Holman holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania’s Indiana State College and M.Ed. and PH.D. degrees from the University of Maryland.
