For the protection of motorists, night time travel lane closures of Montauk Highway/NY Route 27A, between NY Route 231 and NY Route 109 in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, will begin Tuesday night, July 26, 2011 and continue weekdays for approximately five weeks.  The closures will take place between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. each night, Sunday through Thursday, weather permitting.  No street parking is permitted during this construction work.  This operation also includes a small section of NY Route 231 just north of Montauk Highway.  Utilizing lane shifts, a single travel lane in each direction will remain open, but motorists are strongly urged to use alternate routes or they will experience delays.

These travel lane closures are needed to repair the deteriorated pavement of Montauk Highway and NY Route 231 in the Village of Babylon.  The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement will be removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings.  When completed, these pavement repairs will help prolong the integrity of the road.  In addition, handicapped curb ramps at certain locations have been provided.  As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.  Local officials, businesses, and emergency service providers have been notified about the night time travel lane closures.

Motorists who cannot use alternate routes are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the posted detour, and obey the posted construction speed limit and the direction of the flag person for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew.

For 24/7 up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org.
In addition, live traffic information may be obtained from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists, and the local community as this pavement improvement work is undertaken to help assure the continued protection of all motorists.
