Residents can Safely Dispose of Expired or Unused Medications on July 21st

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that he will again be sponsoring a “Shed the Meds” program to help residents safely disposal of unused or expired medications.

The “Shed the Meds” program will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2012 between 9 am and 12 pm at two drop off locations:

     • Bellmore Train Station Parking Lot, Northwest Corner of Sunrise Highway & Centre Avenue, Bellmore

     • Amityville Village Hall, 21 Ireland Place, Amityville

Residents who wish to participate can simply drive up, drop off their old or unused medications, and drive away. All collected medication will be safely disposed of by officers from the Nassau County Police Department and the Amityville Police Department, who will be supervising the program.

Safe disposal helps protect the environment and eliminates the risk of these drugs getting into the hands of small children or those who might misuse them. Improper disposal of medications, such as pouring them down the drain or flushing them down the toilet, can potentially pollute local waterways.

“’Shed the Meds’ allows residents to quickly, easily, and safely dispose of medications and prevent them from harming others or polluting the environment,” said Senator Fuschillo. “I invite everyone who has expired, unwanted, or unused medication to drop it off on July 21st for safe disposal.”

Residents with questions about the “Shed the Meds” program can call Senator Fuschillo’s office at 516-882-0630.
