Waterfront Community Day To Be Held November 3rd
Squadron, Schumer Secured Funds for Redevelopment of Pier; New Park Will Create Continuous Green Ribbon Around Lower Manhattan
NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation's Manhattan Borough Commissioner William Castro led the first public tour of Pier 42 and announced plans for interim recreational use, as the planning process for the pier's redevelopment into a waterfront park gets underway.
Last November, a year after launching their effort to invest LMDC funds in the project, Senator Squadron and U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced that they secured funding for the redevelopment of Pier 42 and completion of the East River waterfront park. This will create a continuous green ribbon around Lower Manhattan, connecting the East and West Sides and providing the Lower East Side and Chinatown communities with much-needed open space. A public planning process to design and redevelop the pier is currently taking place.
Today, Squadron and Castro announced that a Waterfront Community Day will be held on Pier 42 on Saturday, November 3rd from 12PM to 4PM, sponsored by Hester Street Collaborative, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Lower East Side Waterfront Alliance, Senator Squadron, and the Parks Department. The Waterfront Community Day will be the first time the pier is open for public use.
Community members are also invited to participate in Community Board 3's next public planning meeting for Pier 42, to be held on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30PM at the Hamilton Fish Recreation Center (128 Pitt Street between Houston and Stanton Streets).

Pier 42 is located on the Lower East Side, on South Street at Montgomery Street.
