State Senator Eric Adams and Assemblyman David Weprin demand protection for consumers against price gouging at gas pumps, urging residents to call New York State Consumer Protection Board
With the consistent rise of gas prices, there is an urgent need for consumers to receive an adequate product that has been priced at a fair market value. Consumers who have gas price or product issues should know how to file a complaint if they feel their rights have been violated. Bills A6173/S3631 sponsored by Assemblyman Weprin and State Senator Adams would require all gas stations in the State of New York to post a sign near each gas pump that will list contact information for the NYS Consumer Protection Board, which is authorized to investigate such complaints and take action against violators.
Senator Adams states: "I stand with my colleague, Assembly Member David Weprin, to implore residents to file a complaint with the New York State Consumer Protection Board if they suspect that gas is unfairly priced. Our sponsored bills, A6173/S.3631, would require all gas stations in the State of New York to post a sign that lists contact information for the NYS Consumer Protection Board near each gas pump. The Consumer Protection Board is authorized to investigate such complaints and take action against violators. Consumers have the right to receive a product that is fairly priced at market value. It's time that the people of New York have the right to say ‘no’ and not be taken advantage of by the greed of retailers."
Assemblyman Weprin states: "It impossible for consumers to know if the gas price they are paying truly reflects the market value of gas. There is no way for an ordinary person to keep up with the variation of prices across the borough and how quickly they change from day to day.” said Assemblyman David I Weprin. I hope this legislation will provide some remedy for consumers who are concerned that an unscrupulous station may be charging higher than normal pricing. I am proud to stand with my colleague Senator Eric Adams, to renew our public awareness campaign to have residents know their rights and urge them to call the NYS Consumer Protection Board if they believe price gouging is going on."
