Members of the Manhasset High School Crew Team look forward to participating in the Long Island Scholastic Championship Regatta each year and once again this year, their enthusiasm for rowing showed as the team won 14 Gold, two Silver and three Bronze Medals. In fact, Manhasset had 23 boats racing, 19 of which clinched medals.
“It is a beautiful place to row and it allows us to share good times with all the Long Island schools as well as those near us,” said coach Hugo Guardado-Henriquez, who has been with the program for four years.
The Long Island Championship took place on Sunday, May 6 at Centre Island Beach in Bayville and was hosted by the Sagamore Rowing Association. “I must say, over my years attending this regatta. this was by far one of the most and best organize regattas. I do believe that Sagamore Rowing Association and all of the volunteers and those who supported the event should received a lot of credit for running such a phenomenal and well organize event.”
The crowning achievement was made by the Girls 8+ Varsity Team, which won the Supervisor’s Cup, finishing with a time of 5:39.39, defeating the second place time of 5:57.78 by Norwalk River Rowing Association. “We knew the competition was going to be hard and we trained very hard for this particulate event,” said Coach Guardado-Henriquez. “It was an amazing final and I would like to congratulate the rest of the teams for a great performance.”
Senator Jack M. Martins had the honor of presenting the cup to the team. “I am aware of the hard work it takes to be a rower since my daughter rows for her school. The performance of the Manhasset Crew Team is quite impressive. They worked hard and it showed on Sunday. I want to congratulate Coach Hugo and all the members of the team for an outstanding accomplishment. It takes the support of a community to make the program successful and, on a spring Sunday, the team shined its brightest,” said Senator Martins.
