State Senator Mike Nozzolio is reminding taxpayers that beginning Sunday, April 1st, all clothing and shoes costing less than $110 each will be exempt from the New York State’s sales tax. The elimination of this sales tax is estimated to save New Yorkers $210 million over the next year.

“This exemption will provide welcome relief at the cash register for our hardworking families and taxpayers. We can all benefit from this significant tax break and I am very pleased that my colleagues and I were able to restore this critical sales tax exemption,” said Senator Nozzolio. “In addition to saving money for individuals and families throughout New York, this measure will also help to support local businesses by encouraging and boosting sales.”

Senator Nozzolio fought hard to re-establish this exemption after it was completely eliminated in 2010 by a Governor and Legislature who were dominated and controlled by New York City and downstate interests.

“Restoring the sales tax exemption is another step in the right direction for New York, and demonstrates that good things are once again happening in our State to provide relief for families, help employers attract business and create jobs, and brings in visitors from out of State to spend money in New York,” said Senator Nozzolio.
