DEMOCRATIC LEADER ANDREA STEWART-COUSINS APPOINTS SENATOR MICHAEL GIANARIS AS DEPUTY LEADER

Senate Democratic Conference leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins today announced that Senator Michael N. Gianaris will serve as the new Deputy Conference Leader. Senator Gianaris, from Astoria, Queens, represents the 12th Senate District and successfully led the Senate Democrats’ election efforts during the 2012 elections. Senator Gianaris will also remain Chairperson of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee.

“Senator Michael Gianaris is an incredible public servant, and I am pleased that he will serve as the Deputy Conference Leader for the Senate Democrats,” Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. “During the past election, Senator Gianaris led our conference to victories throughout New York State and helped ensure that Democratic Senators were elected despite daunting odds. I look forward to having Senator Gianaris as part of my leadership team.”

“I am honored to be chosen by Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to serve as her Deputy,” said Senator Michael Gianaris. “There is much work to be done to advance the progressive goals the people of our state demand. I am excited to be a part of Senator Stewart-Cousins’s team and look forward to working in partnership with Governor Cuomo to achieve these goals.”

Deputy Leader Gianaris was elected to represent the residents of western Queens in the State Assembly in 2000 and was elected to the State Senate in 2010. During his time in office, Senator Gianaris has been a leading advocate in reforming state government and advancing progressive issues.

Under Democratic Leader Stewart-Cousins’s leadership, the Democratic Conference will continue to advance progressive issues such as enacting common sense gun laws, raising the minimum wage, standing up for women’s health, helping small businesses, and providing real mandate relief for local communities.
