Third Annual Fred Breithut Memorial Golf Outing September 20th To Support Robotics Programs For Grades K-12

Senator Owen H. Johnson joins School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) in announcing The 3rd Annual Fred Breithut Memorial Golf Outing to be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club, 1715 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Hauppauge.  Registration and brunch will take place between noon and 1:15 p.m., with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Following golf will be a reception starting at 6:30 p.m., with dinner being served at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $250 per golfer and $900 per foursome which includes a round of golf, golf carts, brunch and dinner. Tickets are $100 each for dinner only (no golf).  If you are interested in being a sponsor, email: SBPLIgolf@scc-cm.com.

The outing is in memory of Fred Breithut, Founder and Chairman, SBPLI, and a dear friend of Senator Johnson’s who passed away on April 26, 2010.  In 1984, the year before he retired, Mr. Breithut founded School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, a non-profit organization focusing on closing the gap between the skills needed in Long Island’s business community and the schools that prepare the island’s workforce. Under Mr. Breithut’s leadership, more than 100 such partnerships were formed.

In 1999, Mr. Breithut brought the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) to Long Island, in which high school students work with their professional mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create their 130-pound robots, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students.

Proceeds from the golf outing will be used to help support the costs associated with SBPLI’s programs: Junior FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (Jr. FLL), FLL Qualifying and Championship Tournaments and Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition, all of which cost more than $250,000 to host. These robotics programs help students grades K-12 garner an interest in science, engineering and technology and learn about teamwork, problem solving and “gracious professionalism.”

In the event of inclement weather, please call the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club at (631) 232-9850 extension 1. If the course is unplayable, golfers will receive a voucher to play at the course for another day. The reception and dinner will go on as planned.
