Power Contracts are First Under New “ReCharge NY” Program
Twenty local businesses and employers, with 7,000 workers in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties, are among the first to receive low-cost power grants under the state’s new ReCharge New York program.
The companies are receiving a share of the first installment of 910 megawatts of low-cost power set aside to create and protect jobs as part of a major overhaul of New York’s economic development programs, and in exchange for a pledge to invest in creating and retaining a specific number of local jobs.
The power grants were announced today by Governor Cuomo, and the low-cost power will be made available to companies starting July 1.
“When it comes to creating jobs and growing businesses in Central and Northern New York, providing low-cost power is key,” said Senator Ritchie, who serves on the Senate's Energy and Economic Development Committees. “ReCharge New York is a game-changer for New York in the competition to attract and retain businesses and jobs, and these power awards show that Central and Northern New York are very much in the game as we work to turn our economy around and get New Yorkers back to work.”
“I was pleased to support this new program as part of an effort to change the economic climate in New York and send a clear signal that the Empire State is open for business.”
ReCharge New York replaces two prior energy allocation programs, Power for Jobs and the Energy Cost Savings Benefit programs, with a key difference: unlike those short-term programs, the low-cost power contacts under ReCharge New York extend for up to seven years, making them a much more effective tool for attracting business and industry.
All of the businesses in today’s allocation in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties qualified for the maximum, seven-year benefit.
