Senator Saland’s Legislation to Notify Parents Regarding Traffic Violations of Young Drivers Passes Senate

Parents would be informed they have a right to withdraw consent of driving privileges

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C - Poughkeepsie) today announced that the Senate has passed his legislation to require the court to notify parents that their child, who holds a junior driver’s license or a learner’s permit, has committed a traffic infraction. The bill also requires that the notice inform parents they have the right to withdraw their consent for their child to continue to hold a junior license or permit (S.1419).

“Lack of experience, maturity or ability sometimes causes teenagers, who are just learning to drive, to commit traffic infraction,” stated Senator Saland. “Many parents are unaware they have the option to withdraw consent to their child holding a junior license or permit. Statistics show that young drivers are the most likely to be involved in car accidents – it is important that parents know they have the choice to withdraw consent to drive if they feel it is appropriate for their child.”

This bill has been sent to the Assembly for consideration.
