Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman David McDonough (R-North Merrick) recently honored Merrick resident Alexander Eagen on earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive. Only 7 percent of all Boy Scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout last year, according to Boy Scouts of America. Making this honor even more special is the fact that Alex was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at an early age. As a result, he had to work extra hard to learn all the skills that a scout needs to know.
Alex, a member of Troop 225, spent years working towards scouting’s highest honor. He earned 31 different merit badges, was named his troop’s “Scout of the Year” 3 times, and volunteered over 500 hours of community service over the last 4 years. Alex also organized and performed a community service which involved blazing trails, cleaning up, and replanting trees at Faith Laursen Meroke Preserve in Merrick, which was heavily damaged during Superstorm Sandy.
“Alex Eagen is an extraordinary young man who achieved something only a select few ever accomplish; earning the rank of Eagle Scout. It is a special honor, but it is even more special for Alex because of the obstacles he overcame to earn it. Alex is a wonderful example who shows if you work hard and never give up, anything is possible. I am so proud to meet him and congratulate him on this incredible achievement,” said Senator Fuschillo.
