Senator José M. Serrano Participates in Rent Control Forum to Discuss His Push to Promote Tenant-Friendly Legislation in Albany

(Upper West Side, NY)- Senator José M. Serrano participated in a rent control forum, sponsored by Tenants & Neighbors, to address the growing concern by community residents regarding rent-controlled apartments and the availability of affordable housing for seniors citizens within New York City. As part of the forum, Senator Serrano discussed the importance of promoting and pushing tenant-friendly legislation in Albany.

"It is imperative that we protect the limited amount of affordable housing stock left in New York City," said Serrano. "Many of New York's rent controlled tenants are elderly individuals living on fixed incomes. It is unacceptable for our senior citizens to experience rent increases of up to 7.5% per year and be forced to pay fuel pass-along charges when they are living in rent controlled apartments. To protect the vibrancy and diversity of our city, we must enact housing policies that keep seniors and families in their homes," continued Serrano.

"I look forward to working with my colleagues in government to reach the goal of  providing much needed stability to the most vulnerable in our communities," concluded Serrano.
