(Albany, NY) - The State Senate joined Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Hollis) in passing a resolution commending the You Can Go To College Committee as a group that enhances the quality and character of life in communities across New York State and whose members devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry.
The resolution commended the You Can Go to College Committee upon the occasion of its First Annual Pre-Mother's Day Banquet. It's theme was "Rooted in Our Past Preparing for the Future!" and it was held Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Occasions Banquet and Catering Hall in Springfield Gardens.
The senate also recognized the guest speaker at the banquet - President Obama's Aunt, Zeituni Onyango, who shared some of the struggles and triumphs in her life at the ceremony. She is a single mom, an author, a women's rights advocate and she says her mission is to encourage and promote discouraged individuals to move forward in life.
"I wholeheartedly support the You Can Go to College Committee and Zeituni Onyango for their efforts in ensuring that our most vulnerable children are extended the opportunities to learn and grow," said Senator Smith. "They should be celebrated and recognized by their many accomplishments."
