West Islip, NY – Senator Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore) hosted a Senior Scam Prevention Forum to inform seniors about the danger of scams and ways in which they can be prevented.

“Seniors are frequently targeted by con artists because they have nest eggs and excellent credit,” Senator Boyle said.  “I am pleased to provide this opportunity for members of our community to learn ways to protect themselves and their loved ones from becoming victims of these types of crimes.”

The event was held at Our Lady of Consolation located at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip on July 18, 2013 from 1 to 3 pm.  NYS Department of State Division of Consumer Protection representative James Dees delivered a presentation to over 85 residents on ways to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.  The Suffolk County Office for the Aging distributed information at the event as well.

Senior scam crime is a serious issue in today’s society. According to the Federal Trade Commission, complaints of “impostor scams” have been growing for several years and were the sixth most frequent FTC complaint in 2010.
