Poughkeepsie, NY. - “I was disturbed to read the details in the Comptroller’s recent audit of the MTA,” said Senator Terry Gipson.
Comptroller DiNapoli’s audit revealed that the MTA held over $90 million in funds and bank accounts. These funds have not been designated for any specific use.
“I believe the MTA payroll tax enacted in 2009 was a mistake, and the fact that much of the money raised by that levy has gone unused validates my belief,” said Senator Gipson. “I am glad that there has been a partial rollback of this tax, but we need to finish the job and make the rollback complete. Funding the MTA on the backs of small business and non-profits is misguided. I will do everything I can to facilitate a complete repeal of that unfair tax.”
The MTA Payroll Tax was proposed in 2009. It required businesses and non-profits in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island to pay a payroll tax to help fund the MTA.
