Resolution by Senator Lee Zeldin Marks the 60th Anniversary of ‘Under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance

ALBANY—Today, a resolution sponsored by Senator Lee Zeldin (R,C,I—Shirley) was adopted by the NYS Senate, marking  the 60thAnniversary of the addition of the phrase ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance.

“The inclusion of ‘Under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance has become a unifying legacy of our nation’s history,” Senator Zeldin said. “While its use dates back as far as President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, it was officially adopted in 1954, at a time when our nation’s democratic values were under attack.  As a veteran, I consider the phrase especially important as it serves to remind us all, every day, to continue fighting for and protecting our god-given rights.”

February 10th will mark 60 years since the introduction of the original resolution proposing the inclusion of ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance. Today, thanks to the support of a national grassroots movement, the NYS Senate takes pause to commemorate this historic event.
