Senate to Act Legislation to Create a Blue Alert System

Albany – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), a former New York City Police Officer, is announcing that the New York State Senate is expected to take action this afternoon on a bill he sponsored, S.2108, that would establish a Blue Alert system in NY State.

The bill, if passed by the Senate and the Assembly this session, and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo, would aid in the apprehension, identification and location of individuals suspected of killing or seriously wounding any law enforcement officer.

Senator Marty Golden stated, “There is no place on our streets for those who commit such heinous of a crime than to seriously injure or kill any local, state, or federal police officer. That is why today, I call upon my colleagues in the State Senate to approve this legislation so that we can put a mechanism in place here in New York State to more quickly take these criminals into custody.”

The Blue Alert system would be modeled after that of the Amber Alert system and has been established in Texas, Florida and Oklahoma.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-C, Brooklyn/Staten Island) is the Assembly sponsor. A.2278 is currently under consideration of the Governmental Operations Committee.
